As India’s capital region continues its transformation into a global urban hub, the northern state of Haryana has intensified its focus on revolutionizing inter-city mobility. In a high-level meeting held in Chandigarh on May 6, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini reviewed the progress of the ambitious Namo Bharat Corridors—a series of high-speed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors that promise to reshape the movement of millions across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Among the eight Namo Bharat corridors under consideration, three are currently being implemented as part of Phase-I: the 82-kilometer Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut line, the 105-kilometer Delhi-Gurugram-SNB corridor, and the expansive 136-kilometer Delhi-Panipat-Karnal corridor. These projects are being spearheaded by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which envisions a seamless, fast, and eco-friendly transit network that connects key urban and semi-urban centres around Delhi.

Highlighting the transformational potential of the RRTS network, Chief Minister Saini emphasized its ability to not only reduce urban congestion but also drive regional economic growth. “These corridors are more than just transportation lines,” he remarked during the review. “They are arteries of economic activity, designed to reduce travel time, increase accessibility, and empower the workforce in satellite cities.”

Saini directed officials to expedite approvals for the Delhi-SNB and Delhi-Karnal corridors, underlining the importance of timely implementation. He also stressed the need for effective integration with existing metro systems to enhance usability. Notably, the operational segment of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor—which covers 55 kilometers—has already received overwhelming public approval due to its speed, convenience, and punctuality.

The Namo Bharat trains are engineered for the future. With a top design speed of 180 km/h, they drastically reduce travel times—for example, the commute between Ghaziabad and Gurugram, which currently takes around 100 minutes by road, is expected to drop to just 37 minutes via the RRTS. The trains run at frequent intervals of 5 to 10 minutes and are equipped with platform screen doors, automated fare collection systems, and stations placed strategically 5 to 10 kilometers apart.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Saini also reviewed alignment plans, station locations, and land requirements for both the Delhi-Gurugram-SNB and Delhi-Karnal corridors. In addition, he discussed the proposed Gurugram-Faridabad-Noida corridor, instructing officials to provide all necessary approvals to NCRTC to enable the timely drafting of a detailed project report.

Haryana’s commitment to the Namo Bharat vision reflects a broader national ambition to reimagine urban transport and connectivity in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. As urban sprawl continues to strain traditional infrastructure, high-speed regional mobility systems like the RRTS could prove to be game changers—not just in easing congestion, but in fostering equitable development and sustainability across regions.
