In a long-awaited spiritual revival, the sacred Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to recommence on June 30 after a five-year interruption, bringing immense joy to thousands of Hindu devotees worldwide. The prestigious pilgrimage, revered for its spiritual significance and formidable Himalayan terrain, had been suspended in 2020 owing to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, logistical and diplomatic constraints had kept the journey on hold. However, thanks to the concerted efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the yatra will resume this year, reinstating a centuries-old tradition that draws seekers from around the globe.

A key development was the high-level meeting held in New Delhi, where officials from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Uttarakhand government finalized the blueprint for the 2025 pilgrimage. The responsibility of organizing and managing the yatra has been entrusted to the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), a state-run agency with prior experience in handling high-altitude pilgrimages.

This year’s pilgrimage will follow the traditional route through the Lipulekh Pass, perched at an awe-inspiring 17,000 feet in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district. The entire journey will span 22 days per group, beginning from Delhi and culminating at Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, under Chinese administration. The first batch of pilgrims is scheduled to enter China via Lipulekh on July 10, while the final group is expected to return to India by August 22.

The yatra will be conducted in five separate groups, each comprising 50 carefully selected and medically cleared individuals. A total of 250 pilgrims will undertake the journey this year. The itinerary is designed to ensure gradual acclimatization to the high altitudes. Pilgrims will travel from Delhi to Tanakpur in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district, before progressing to Dharchula in Pithoragarh. Further acclimatization will take place in Gunji and Nabhidang, two remote hamlets nestled amid the Himalayan peaks. From there, the groups will cross into Tibet at Taklakot, beginning the sacred segment of their journey around Mount Kailash and the pristine Lake Manasarovar.

The return journey will offer a similarly scenic passage through Bundi in Pithoragarh, Chaukori, and Almora before concluding back in Delhi. Medical screenings will be a mandatory component of the journey, first conducted in Delhi and again at Gunji, ensuring the health and safety of the pilgrims in the challenging environment.

The religious significance of this pilgrimage cannot be overstated. Mount Kailash, venerated as the abode of Lord Shiva, holds profound spiritual meaning for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon religion. Circumambulating the holy peak and bathing in the icy waters of Lake Manasarovar are believed to cleanse one’s soul and offer the promise of moksha—liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

As geopolitical dynamics and high-altitude logistics continue to shape access to the region, the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a testament to India’s diplomatic finesse and infrastructure preparedness. The decision to route the journey through Lipulekh underscores the government’s strategic preference, bypassing the previously used Nathu La route in Sikkim.

With spiritual fervor rising among devotees and meticulous planning underway, the 2025 Kailash Mansarovar Yatra stands poised to reaffirm its legacy as one of the most revered and challenging pilgrimages in the world. This revival not only marks a return to faith and tradition but also a significant stride in re-establishing India’s cultural and spiritual connect with the Himalayan frontiers.
