Punjab Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira has reignited controversy by demanding a white paper on the construction of a VIP helipad in Mohali, alleging misuse of public funds and lack of transparency. Khaira claimed that the facility was created primarily to facilitate visits of high-profile political leaders, raising serious questions about priorities in a financially strained state.

Addressing the media, Khaira said the government must clarify when the project was approved, how much money was spent, and under whose authority. He argued that at a time when Punjab faces fiscal challenges, such expenditures require full public disclosure.

The AAP-led government dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, stating that infrastructure projects are undertaken based on administrative requirements and security protocols. Officials said the helipad serves multiple purposes and is not meant for any single individual.

Despite the clarification, the issue has struck a chord in political circles, particularly as transparency remains a key promise of the ruling party. Congress leaders insisted that a white paper would help restore public trust and put speculation to rest.

Political analysts say the helipad controversy reflects a broader battle over governance narratives. While AAP positions itself as different from traditional parties, the opposition is keen to highlight any perceived contradiction between promise and practice.

As the debate unfolds, the government faces the task of balancing administrative explanations with public perception. Whether or not the issue escalates further will depend on how convincingly details are shared and how the Assembly addresses the demand.
