Haryana is poised to play a pivotal role in the ambitious “Aravali Green Wall project,” an initiative gaining national prominence as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to officially launch its next phase on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day. This monumental endeavor aims to create a continuous green belt across the Aravali mountain range, extending from Porbandar in Gujarat to Delhi, serving as a critical natural barrier against the encroaching Thar Desert and significantly bolstering regional biodiversity.

In its initial phase, Haryana has committed to a massive ecological restoration effort, targeting the revival of forest cover on 24,990 hectares of degraded Aravali land. This extensive restoration work will be carried out across five key districts: Gurugram, Faridabad, Nuh, Rewari, and Mahendergarh. The selection of these districts underscores their strategic importance in the Aravali ecosystem and their vulnerability to environmental degradation. The project’s launch on World Environment Day itself highlights the urgency and importance the state government places on environmental conservation.

Vineet Kumar Garg, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) for Haryana, confirmed that the groundwork for this massive restoration will commence promptly on June 5. Detailed GIS mapping has already been completed, identifying the 24,990 hectares of degraded forest area that are suitable for immediate restoration. The comprehensive plan involves initial efforts in soil and water conservation to prepare the land, followed by the systematic planting of 15-20 species of native vegetation. These species will be carefully selected based on local climatic conditions and ecological requirements, ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the green wall. The focus on native species is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and supporting local wildlife.

While the government’s proactive steps are commendable, environmental activists and experts continue to advocate for stronger legal protections for the Aravalis. They argue that despite restoration efforts, the ancient mountain range remains vulnerable to the persistent threats of illegal mining and rampant deforestation. Without robust legal frameworks and their strict enforcement, the gains made through afforestation could be undermined, potentially leading to continued degradation of this vital ecological asset. The call for comprehensive legal protection emphasizes the need for a multi-faceted approach that combines active restoration with stringent regulatory measures.

The “Aravali Green Wall project” is not merely a regional initiative; it aligns with India’s broader climate goals, particularly the commitment to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. By contributing significantly to this national target, Haryana is not only protecting its own ecological heritage but also playing a crucial role in India’s fight against climate change and desertification. This project represents a beacon of hope for environmental regeneration in a region facing increasing environmental pressures.
