Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Friday said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is firmly progressing towards becoming a developed nation, and by the time the country celebrates the centenary of independence, India will hold a leading position in the world. He underlined that Khadi will play a crucial role in this journey by empowering millions of artisans and weavers across the country.

Speaking at the Khadi Artisans’ Festival held at Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, Shah interacted with artisans and distributed modern machines, tool kits, and margin money worth ₹301 crore under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). He was accompanied by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Shah also virtually inaugurated several Khadi-related projects, including the newly constructed Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) office and warehouse in Panchkula, along with PMEGP units and a central wool processing plant.

Amit Shah emphasized that Khadi is not just fabric but a movement for self-reliance. He said that while earlier governments neglected Khadi and village industries, Prime Minister Modi revived them during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and later at the national level. Under Modi’s leadership, Khadi’s turnover surged from ₹33,000 crore to ₹1.70 lakh crore in just 11 years, directly benefiting weavers rather than big capitalists. Improved packaging, marketing, and modern machinery such as automatic pottery wheels, leather machines, and upgraded charkhas have further boosted artisans’ productivity and morale.

Highlighting Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Shah said that the dream of self-rule envisioned during the freedom struggle remains incomplete without embracing indigenous products and language. He recalled how the Prime Minister recently gave a Diwali gift by reducing GST on over 395 items, showing the government’s commitment to strengthening the domestic economy.

Shah asserted that Khadi is not only a symbol of the nation’s heritage but also an instrument of economic empowerment and global identity. “Khadi for Nation must now become Khadi for Fashion, and every Indian has to play a role in this transformation. By adopting Khadi and promoting indigenous products, we can make India self-reliant and globally competitive,” he said, urging citizens to take pride in swadeshi products.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, speaking on the occasion, reiterated that the Haryana government is committed to promoting Khadi products and supporting rural artisans. The event highlighted the government’s continued efforts to revive and strengthen India’s traditional industries, aligning them with modern opportunities while preserving cultural heritage.
