Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to following in the footsteps of the nation’s legendary martyrs, ensuring holistic development of the state and prioritising the welfare of economically weaker and underprivileged communities. Speaking at a commemorative function marking the death anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Dhadhogal, the Chief Minister highlighted Punjab’s rich legacy of courage, sacrifice, and unity, calling it a land that nurtures love and harmony but rejects the seeds of hatred.
Mann emphasised that Punjab’s history is deeply intertwined with the teachings of great Gurus, saints, seers, and poets, who inspired generations to oppose tyranny and injustice. He lamented that even after 75 years of independence, the fruits of freedom have not reached every household, blaming past regimes for misusing power to spread the menace of drugs, amass illicit wealth, and encourage corruption. These actions, he said, betrayed the dreams of the martyrs and left the state’s youth disillusioned, forcing many to seek a future abroad.
Criticising previous governments, the Chief Minister accused former leaders of building “palatial fortresses” for themselves while remaining inaccessible to the people. According to him, their self-serving governance weakened the state’s progress and compromised opportunities for the younger generation. In contrast, Mann reiterated his administration’s dedication to transparent governance, public accessibility, and fulfilling the vision of Punjab’s freedom fighters.
Marking the 350th Martyrdom Day of Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji, known as the ‘Hind Di Chadar’ (Protector of India), Mann announced that the Punjab government will organise grand events and undertake comprehensive development of sites associated with the Guru. A detailed plan, he said, is already in place to preserve and promote this spiritual and cultural heritage for future generations.
Taking a firm stance against drug networks, Mann vowed that there would be no leniency towards the so-called “Jarnails” who facilitated the drug trade. He revealed that several powerful figures, who once operated with impunity and even transported drugs in government vehicles, have been arrested under his government. “No one dared to arrest these leaders before, but now they are paying the price for their crimes,” he asserted.
Highlighting his government’s achievements in water management, Mann noted that when he assumed office, only 21% of Punjab’s agricultural land was irrigated using canal water. Today, that figure has increased to 63%, with canal and river water now reaching tail-end villages for the first time in history. He underscored his administration’s commitment to conserving Punjab’s water resources for future sustainability.
Paying tribute to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Dhadhogal, Mann hailed him as a fearless leader of the Parja Mandal movement who devoted his life to resisting oppression and injustice under princely state rule. Dhadhogal, he noted, was deeply involved in the Akali and Gurdwara Reform Movements, emerging as a leading figure in the fight for the rights of the people.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister also announced two major road projects worth ₹17.21 crore. The first, funded by the Punjab Mandi Board, will connect the Dhuri-Amargarh Road to the Dhuri-Chheenta Wala Road, passing through key villages such as Dhadhogal, Burj Gohra, Burj Seda, Cheema, Bhari Mansa, and Samundgarh Chhanna. The second project, undertaken by the Public Works Department, will link Amargarh to the Dhuri-Bagrian Road, passing through Dhadhogal, Kheri Jattan, Lohar Majra, and Electricity Colony. Both roads will be 18 feet wide, with contractors responsible for maintenance for five years.
Mann concluded by reiterating that his government’s mission is to transform Punjab into a state that not only honours its martyrs but also delivers on their vision of equality, justice, and prosperity for all.
