Amritsar, April 5, 2025: On the third day of his impactful anti-drug padyatra, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria emphasized the urgent need to create employment opportunities for youth, especially in border areas, and to actively engage them in sports and positive recreational activities to prevent them from falling prey to drug addiction.

The awareness march, aimed at combating the growing menace of drug abuse in Punjab, began from Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School and concluded at Sri Guru Ram Das Nursing College. A patriotic atmosphere filled the air as the school’s student band played inspiring national songs, drawing enthusiastic participation from locals, students, and volunteers.
Governor Kataria Calls for Public Mobilization Against Drugs
Addressing a large gathering of students, Governor Kataria invoked the heroic sacrifices of Sikh Gurus including Guru Ram Das, Guru Teg Bahadur, and Guru Gobind Singh, encouraging young minds to embrace their legacy by participating in the collective battle against drug addiction.
“Our youth, particularly in border districts, need constructive outlets and better livelihood opportunities. This is key to safeguarding them from the deadly grip of narcotics,” the Governor stated.
He made a fervent appeal to women and children to join the movement, urging that it be transformed into a mass people’s campaign that reaches every household in Punjab.
No-Show by State Leadership Draws Questions
When questioned about the absence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other ruling party leaders during the padyatra, Kataria expressed hope that they might join the campaign on the fifth day or during its grand culmination.
“This campaign isn’t political—it’s about Punjab’s future. I hope all leaders, irrespective of affiliation, will step forward to support this noble cause,” he added.
A State-Wide Effort Against Drug Menace
This padyatra is part of a larger initiative led by the Punjab Raj Bhavan to raise awareness about substance abuse, particularly among the vulnerable sections of society. The campaign is expected to culminate with a high-profile closing ceremony, bringing together educators, law enforcement, civil society, and healthcare professionals.
