In a bold decision that marks a generational shift in Indian cricket, the BCCI selectors on Saturday announced Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain, replacing veteran Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match series in Australia later this month.

Gill, 26, who recently impressed with his leadership skills during the Test tour of England, will now take charge of the 50-over squad in what is being seen as a move to prepare the next line of leaders for Indian cricket. Despite losing the captaincy, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been retained in the squad, signaling a balance between experience and youth.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the rationale behind the decision, stressing that having three different captains for three formats creates logistical and strategic challenges. “It is very difficult to have three different captains for three formats. For the selectors, and more importantly for the coach, planning with three different leaders is never easy,” Agarkar said in Ahmedabad.

Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI squad, while KL Rahul will don the gloves as the primary wicketkeeper. Dhruv Jurel, after consistent domestic performances, has earned his maiden ODI call-up as the second wicketkeeper, replacing Sanju Samson.

The squad features a blend of established names and emerging talent. Alongside the stalwarts Rohit and Kohli, youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy will be looking to make their mark on Australian soil. The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav, with Washington Sundar and Axar Patel adding all-round depth.

India’s ODI squad for Australia: Shubman Gill (Captain), Shreyas Iyer (Vice-Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (Wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (Wicketkeeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal.

This transition from Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill is not just about the upcoming series but could also shape the future of Indian cricket leadership. With the 2027 World Cup cycle already in mind, the selectors appear to be grooming Gill for long-term responsibility.
