Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu on Sunday evening for a significant three-day tour of Jammu and Kashmir, marking his first visit since the formation of the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government in the Union Territory last October. The high-profile visit underscores the Centre’s ongoing focus on strengthening security and expediting development initiatives in the region.

Mr. Shah was warmly received at the technical airport by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha along with several senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The visit is being viewed as a crucial step towards bolstering the party’s grassroots presence and reviewing ground-level implementation of key schemes and infrastructure projects in the sensitive border region.

Soon after his arrival, Mr. Shah was scheduled to head to the BJP headquarters at Trikuta Nagar in Jammu to participate in a strategy meeting with BJP MLAs and senior office bearers. His visit to the party office coincided with the celebration of BJP’s Foundation Day, which was observed earlier in the day with enthusiasm by local party workers and leaders.

In light of the Home Minister’s visit, police and paramilitary forces were placed on high alert across Jammu and Kashmir, with heightened surveillance and security arrangements at all key locations.

On Monday, Mr. Shah will travel to the Kathua district where he is slated to visit the Border Security Force (BSF) Border Outpost Vinay, situated along the India-Pakistan border. There, he will review the prevailing security situation and engage with personnel stationed at the forward post.

Later in the day, the Home Minister will meet with the families of martyred Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel at the Raj Bhavan in Jammu. In a gesture of solidarity and support, he will also hand over appointment letters to selected next-of-kin of the martyrs who have been offered government employment on compassionate grounds.

On the final day of his visit, April 8, Mr. Shah will proceed to Srinagar, where he will chair a high-level meeting at the Raj Bhavan to assess the status of various developmental programmes underway in the Union Territory. The review will cover infrastructure development, economic initiatives, and welfare schemes aimed at promoting stability and growth in the region.

The visit comes at a critical juncture, as the Centre continues to focus on normalising the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, boosting economic activities, and enhancing the overall security architecture, especially in areas close to the international border.
