A sudden squall swept through Himachal Pradesh on the night of April 16, 2025, leaving a trail of destruction across the state. Shimla, the capital city, experienced the brunt of the storm around 11:15 PM, plunging into darkness as high-velocity winds uprooted trees and damaged power infrastructure. The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) reported significant damage to transformers and electric poles, leading to widespread power outages that persisted into the following day.

The agricultural sector suffered considerable losses, particularly in the upper Shimla region. Fruit growers reported extensive damage to apple, plum, and apricot orchards, with many fruits prematurely falling from trees due to the storm’s intensity. In areas like Jubbal and Rampur, apple growers faced substantial setbacks, threatening the livelihoods of many farmers.

The squall also disrupted transportation and daily life. Fallen trees blocked several national highways, including the Gagret-Una route, causing traffic standstills for hours. In districts like Una, Kangra, and Shimla, the storm’s force shattered window panes, tore off tin roofs, and even dismantled wedding pandals. The combination of heavy rain and strong winds led to the uprooting of trees and the collapse of electric poles, further complicating rescue and restoration efforts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued unstable weather conditions for the region. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected on April 16 and 17, with the possibility of hail and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h on April 18 and 19. Additionally, the IMD’s seasonal outlook indicates that mean maximum and minimum temperatures will be above normal for most parts of Himachal Pradesh during April 2025.

This recent weather event underscores the vulnerability of Himachal Pradesh to sudden climatic disturbances, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness to safeguard both lives and livelihoods in the region.
