A pall of grief has descended upon Khai Pheme Ke village in Punjab’s Ferozepur district following the death of a 50-year-old woman, Sukhwinder Kaur, who succumbed to grievous injuries sustained during a Pakistani aerial intrusion last week. Sukhwinder Kaur and two of her family members were critically injured last Friday when debris from the intrusion fell on their home, triggering a devastating fire that engulfed the structure and a nearby car.

The deceased, Sukhwinder Kaur, her husband Lakhwinder Singh (55), and their son Monu Singh (24) had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ludhiana. While the two men continue to fight their injuries, Sukhwinder Kaur’s passing marks a tragic escalation of the incident’s impact on the family and the wider community.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed profound sorrow over Sukhwinder Kaur’s death and announced an ex gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh for the bereaved family from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. “Our government stands firmly with her family during this time of immense pain, and we are committed to providing all possible support to help them cope with this devastating loss,” the Chief Minister stated.

Extending further assistance, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora also pledged Rs 2 lakh in financial aid to the family, highlighting the collective empathy and support for the victims of this cross-border incident.

The aerial intrusion that led to this tragedy was part of a series of attempted attacks by Pakistan along India’s western borders, including Punjab. Indian security forces successfully thwarted the majority of these incursions. Following four days of heightened cross-border drone and missile strikes, New Delhi and Islamabad reached a mutual understanding on Saturday afternoon to cease military actions with immediate effect, bringing a fragile calm to the tense border region.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, in a statement echoing his earlier sentiments in Punjabi, reiterated the government’s commitment to the affected family. “The family from village Khai Pheme Ke in Ferozepur was a victim of a Pakistani drone attack a few days ago. Today, a member of the family has tragically passed away during treatment in the hospital. Our heartfelt condolences are with the family. Human life is invaluable. The family will be provided with financial assistance of ₹10 lakh (₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and ₹5 lakh from MP Sanjeev Arora Ji).”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of cross-border tensions and the devastating impact such events can have on innocent civilians residing in border areas. While diplomatic efforts have led to a cessation of hostilities, the scars of the recent escalation will undoubtedly remain, particularly for families like Sukhwinder Kaur’s, who have paid the ultimate price.
