Marking a significant stride in India’s push for clean and flexible power generation, THDC India Limited has formalized a landmark agreement with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited. Under this strategic Memorandum of Understanding and Power Purchase Agreement, Gujarat will source 184.08 MW of green energy from the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant, the country’s first hydropower project to feature Variable Speed Pumped Storage technology.

The agreement, signed on June 25, brings together federal vision and state execution in a bid to ensure uninterrupted and environment-friendly energy during peak demand periods. Present at the event were Gujarat’s top officials and THDCIL’s leadership, who jointly highlighted the importance of technological innovation in hydropower for achieving sustainable energy security.

According to THDCIL CMD R. K. Vishnoi, the Tehri PSP symbolizes a new era of smart energy solutions that are not only sustainable but also highly adaptable to modern-day electricity consumption patterns. It will play an instrumental role in stabilizing grid operations, especially with the increasing share of intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind.

The collaboration mirrors the national policy direction of utilizing pumped storage as a critical grid-balancing technology. It also signals THDCIL’s growing influence in the country’s green transition, reinforcing its position as a key player in India’s hydropower evolution. This project will ensure that Gujarat remains ahead in deploying sustainable infrastructure for a reliable and climate-resilient future.
