The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session, held in Shimla on August 21, 2025, was marked by heated exchanges over job creation and employment statistics. During the session’s question hour, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the incumbent government of providing false figures about job appointments made during their tenure. The BJP raised specific questions about posts created and jobs provided, claiming the government failed to deliver clear answers, resulting in walkouts and slogans echoing through the house.

Chief Minister Sukhu defended his administration’s track record, stating that 23,191 youth had secured government jobs in the past two years, with 5,960 new posts created and 1,783 redundant positions abolished. He further refuted the opposition’s claims, denouncing the previous BJP government for job scams and leaked exam papers. Sukhu highlighted reforms such as dissolving the old selection board in favor of a new, transparent recruitment process.

Outside the assembly, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur countered, asserting that the chief minister avoided direct questions and accused him of lying about employment figures. Sukhu, meanwhile, portrayed the BJP as divided and resorting to political drama instead of substance, blaming walkouts on internal party tensions and ongoing investigations into earlier scams.

The assembly also saw a rare moment of consensus as a proposal to award the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, to Dr. Y.S. Parmar, the founding architect of Himachal Pradesh, was unanimously adopted, reflecting his enduring impact on the state’s identity and progress.
