In a strong message against misconduct in educational institutions, the government of Himachal Pradesh has dismissed three assistant professors after they were found guilty of sexually harassing students in separate cases across the state. The decisive action reflects the administration’s zero-tolerance approach towards harassment on campuses and underscores its intent to ensure a safe academic environment.

The action has been taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, whose government has, in recent months, emphasized accountability and institutional discipline, particularly in cases involving the safety and dignity of students. Officials confirmed that departmental inquiries in all three cases established clear evidence of misconduct, leading to the immediate termination of services.

Among those dismissed is Pawan Kumar, who was serving as an assistant professor of dance at Jawahar Lal Nehru Government College of Fine Arts. He was found guilty of sexually harassing a female student, prompting strict disciplinary action following a formal investigation.

In a separate case, Anil Kumar, an assistant professor of chemistry at Sidharth Government College Naduan, was also dismissed after being held responsible for inappropriate behavior with a student. Authorities noted that the inquiry process adhered to established legal and institutional guidelines, ensuring that due process was followed before the final decision.

The third case involved Virender Sharma, an assistant professor of mathematics at Rajiv Gandhi Government Degree College. He was found guilty of harassing a Bachelor of Science student. Following confirmation of the charges, the government moved swiftly to terminate his employment.

Officials stated that the dismissal orders not only remove the individuals from their current positions but also bar them from future employment under the state government. This step is being seen as part of a broader effort to deter such behavior and reinforce the seriousness of institutional ethics.

The developments come at a time when concerns around student safety and harassment in educational institutions are receiving increasing attention nationwide. The Sukhu administration has made it clear that any violation of trust within the teacher-student relationship will invite the harshest possible action. Sources within the government indicated that departments have been directed to strengthen internal complaint mechanisms and ensure that students feel secure in reporting any form of misconduct.

Education experts and civil society observers have welcomed the move, noting that strict enforcement of rules is essential to restore confidence among students and parents. They argue that visible and decisive action in such cases sends a clear signal that authorities are willing to act firmly against abuse of power within academic spaces.

While the government’s action addresses the immediate cases, it also raises broader questions about institutional safeguards, awareness, and preventive mechanisms. The administration is expected to further review policies related to faculty conduct, grievance redressal systems, and campus monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future.

By taking swift and uncompromising action, the Himachal Pradesh government has positioned itself as proactive in dealing with sensitive issues that directly impact student welfare. The message is unambiguous: educational institutions must remain safe spaces, and any breach of that trust will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
