Highlighting a major milestone in the state’s revenue generation, the Punjab Finance, Excise and Taxation Minister announced here today that the state has registered an impressive double-digit growth in both Value Added Tax (VAT) and Punjab State Development Tax (PSDT) collections, marking a significant fiscal leap in April 2026. “The state has successfully generated a total additional revenue of approximately Rs 265 crore from both these sectors, a success achieved entirely due to improved monitoring systems, strict enforcement protocols and a transparent tax administrative framework,” the Finance Minister said.
Sharing details of this financial success, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the consistent upward trend in these special tax areas highlights the clear policy priorities of the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. “I am happy to announce that our VAT receipts have registered an impressive growth of 23.28% for the month of April 2026. This significant growth has resulted in a net addition of approximately Rs 230 crore to the state exchequer, reflecting our continued improvements in tax administration and compliance,” the Finance Minister said.
Elaborating on the state’s recent success in development tax revenues, Finance Minister Cheema detailed the extremely positive trends observed in the PSDT sector. He said, “Along with the strong performance in VAT, our PSDT collections have also increased by an impressive 20.43%. This growth rate directly translates into an increase of approximately Rs 35 crore. These figures are a direct reflection of our improved monitoring and strict enforcement protocols within this sector.”
Finance Minister Cheema attributed this overall economic growth to the diligent implementation of advanced monitoring strategies and a strong commitment to fair governance. He said, “This strong performance in VAT and PSDT underscores our government’s focused strategy of combining technology-driven enforcement with proactive taxpayer support. We have created a robust enforcement framework aimed at protecting government revenues. I assure the citizens of Punjab that we will continue to take strict action against tax evasion, while also ensuring a completely fair and transparent tax system for all taxpayers who comply with the rules.”
