In a significant administrative development, the Haryana government has taken the decision to relieve Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor from his role as the Director General of Police (DGP), a post he had been holding amid ongoing controversy. Kapoor’s removal comes at a critical time as the process to appoint a permanent police chief has been facing delays due to procedural hurdles. According to official information, Kapoor had gone on leave on November 13 after his name appeared in a suicide note left by an IPS officer, Puran Kumar, which triggered public scrutiny and debate over administrative accountability. The government has now reassigned him as the chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, a position that allows him to continue serving in a senior capacity while stepping aside from active policing duties.
Taking over as the officiating DGP is O.P. Singh, a senior officer who will guide the police force as it navigates routine law enforcement duties, crime prevention, and public safety oversight. Singh’s appointment is expected to continue beyond his scheduled retirement on December 31, as the government prepares a fresh panel of eligible candidates for formal approval. Names such as Alok Mittal, Ashwinder Singh Chawla, and A. Singhal are reported to be in consideration as part of the ongoing selection process. The state administration has indicated that the final recommendation will be forwarded to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which is responsible for vetting and approving senior police appointments.
