New Delhi: State-owned hydropower major NHPC Limited has scripted a new chapter in its operational journey by registering its highest-ever single-day electricity generation, reflecting the company’s expanding renewable energy portfolio and growing contribution to India’s clean energy ambitions.

On August 2, 2026, NHPC generated 169.34 million units (MU) of electricity—the highest single-day output in the company’s history during the 2026-27 financial year. Significantly, the milestone came just a day after the company had established its previous record of 167.02 MU on August 1, underlining the strong operational momentum achieved during the ongoing monsoon season.

The achievement marks more than just a numerical record. It highlights NHPC’s strengthened generation capabilities, improved asset utilization and the successful integration of newly commissioned hydroelectric capacity into the national power grid at a time when electricity demand continues to remain robust.

NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta attributed the record-breaking performance to the collective efforts of the company’s workforce and its sustained focus on operational excellence, efficient project execution and maintaining high standards of reliability across its generating stations.

A series of strategic developments has played a crucial role in driving this exceptional performance. Among the most significant is the commissioning of the 800 MW Parbati-II Hydroelectric Project, one of the key hydro projects expected to enhance the country’s renewable energy generation capacity.

The company has also substantially expanded generation at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, where an additional 1,000 MW has been brought into operation. This includes a 250 MW unit commissioned in May 2026, further strengthening NHPC’s ability to harness peak monsoon inflows for clean power generation.

Another major boost came from the revival of the 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station in July 2026. The project had remained out of operation since the devastating flash floods of October 2023, and its successful restoration has added valuable generation capacity back to the national grid while demonstrating NHPC’s resilience in overcoming operational challenges.

With these additions, NHPC’s total operational installed capacity has increased to 7,651 MW, comprising 7,251 MW of hydropower, 350 MW of solar power and 50 MW of wind energy. The diversified renewable energy portfolio has enabled the company to optimize generation during the current high water inflow season and improve overall system efficiency.

The record generation also reflects NHPC’s growing role in India’s energy transition. As the country accelerates investments in renewable energy and grid stability, hydropower continues to serve as a reliable source of clean, flexible and dispatchable electricity, complementing solar and wind generation.

The company said the latest milestone reinforces its commitment to delivering dependable, sustainable and affordable electricity while contributing to India’s long-term energy security, decarbonisation goals and transition towards a cleaner power ecosystem.
