The northeastern states of India are grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis as landslides and flash floods, triggered by relentless rains, have claimed at least 30 lives over the past two days. Today alone, fourteen more fatalities were reported across the region, highlighting the escalating nature of the disaster. States including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram are struggling to cope with the widespread devastation.

Assam is among the worst-hit, where continuous downpours have led to flooding in 12 districts, impacting more than 60,000 people. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that in just the past 24 hours, five people were killed in landslides in the Kamrup Metropolitan district, a grim reminder of the region’s vulnerability to natural calamities. Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah confirmed that three women lost their lives in a landslide at the Bonda area on the outskirts of Guwahati.

In a stark illustration of the extreme weather, Guwahati recorded an unprecedented 111 millimeters of rainfall in a single day, breaking a 67-year-old record. The Brahmaputra and other rivers in the region are swelling, posing further flood risks in an already critical situation. The meteorological department has issued a red and orange alert for several parts of Assam, with orange and yellow alerts extended to other northeastern states, cautioning residents and authorities about potential worsening conditions.

Arunachal Pradesh faced a particularly tragic episode last night, where seven members of two families were swept away after their Brezza car was caught in a landslide along the NH-13 stretch between Bana and Seppa in East Kameng district. Family members on the scene confirmed the victims’ identities, adding a deeply personal dimension to the broader tragedy. Another Sumo vehicle narrowly escaped the deadly landslide but did not report any casualties. In total, Arunachal Pradesh has reported nine fatalities, compounding the region’s grief.

These natural disasters are exacerbating existing challenges in the northeast, where access to remote areas is often limited, and response times can be slow. The immediate needs include rescue operations, temporary shelters, food supplies, and medical assistance for those displaced and injured. Authorities are also urging residents to evacuate high-risk areas and adhere to safety advisories as rains continue to lash the region.

This series of events starkly highlights the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure in the face of increasingly volatile weather patterns. As families mourn their loved ones and communities struggle to rebuild, the resilience of the people in the northeast is once again being tested.
