AAP Expands Political Base in Punjab as Former BJP Leader Anil Kumar Sethi Joins Party
Punjab’s political landscape continues to witness shifts ahead of key electoral battles, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announcing the induction of senior political figure Anil Kumar Sethi from Fazilka. The development was highlighted by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who framed the move as a sign of growing confidence in the party’s governance model and its development-oriented agenda.
Sethi, a former senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has previously served as a member of the Punjab state executive and held the position of chairman of the Fazilka Municipal Council. His entry into AAP is being viewed by party leaders as a strategic gain, particularly in the border districts where political alignments have historically been fluid and closely contested.
In a strongly worded statement, Chief Minister Mann criticised opposition alliances, accusing them of consistently working against the interests of Punjab. Without naming specific parties, he suggested that political forces responsible for weakening the state in the past were now attempting to re-emerge in new forms. He asserted that such efforts would not succeed, emphasising Punjab’s historical legacy of resilience and sacrifice.
“The people of Punjab are aware and vigilant,” Mann indicated, adding that the state’s political consciousness has been shaped by a long history of standing against injustice. He maintained that his government remains committed to safeguarding Punjab’s rights and ensuring that governance remains focused on public welfare rather than political manoeuvring.
The Chief Minister also used the occasion to underline what he described as AAP’s “people-centric policies,” arguing that the party’s governance model is increasingly attracting leaders from other political formations. According to him, Sethi’s decision to join AAP reflects a broader trend of political realignment, where individuals are moving away from traditional parties in favour of what he termed a “development-driven political approach.”
Political observers note that such inductions are not uncommon in the run-up to elections, as parties attempt to consolidate their organisational strength at the grassroots level. Fazilka, located in Punjab’s southwestern belt, holds strategic importance due to its socio-economic profile and electoral dynamics, making Sethi’s inclusion potentially significant for AAP’s outreach in the region.
While the BJP has not yet issued an official response to Sethi’s departure, analysts suggest that defections of experienced local leaders can have both symbolic and practical implications. They may influence cadre morale and voter perception, particularly in constituencies where personal networks and local leadership play a decisive role.
