India has lost one of its most celebrated custodians of folk culture with the passing of Padma Vibhushan awardee and legendary Pandavani exponent Teejan Bai, whose powerful performances transformed a regional oral tradition into a globally recognised art form.

Teejan Bai died in the early hours at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur after battling a prolonged illness. She was 70.

Her death marks the end of an extraordinary artistic journey that spanned more than five decades and redefined the place of folk traditions in India’s cultural landscape. Tributes poured in from political leaders, artists, cultural institutions and admirers across the country, all remembering her as a pioneering performer who devoted her life to preserving and popularising the ancient storytelling tradition of Pandavani.

Born in Chhattisgarh, Teejan Bai emerged from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most respected folk artists. At a time when Pandavani—a dramatic musical narration of episodes from the Mahabharata—was traditionally dominated by male performers, she broke social barriers and carved out a place for herself through exceptional talent, determination and an unmistakable stage presence.

Her style of narration combined powerful vocals, expressive acting and dramatic storytelling, enabling audiences across linguistic and cultural backgrounds to connect with the epic tales of the Mahabharata. Performing with minimal props, often carrying a tambura as a symbolic weapon or character, she brought ancient stories to life with remarkable intensity.

Over the years, Teejan Bai became synonymous with Pandavani itself. She represented India at numerous international cultural festivals and performed in countries across Europe, Asia, North America and Australia, earning acclaim for introducing global audiences to one of India’s oldest oral storytelling traditions.

Her immense contribution to Indian art and culture was recognised through several of the country’s highest civilian honours. She received the Padma Shri, followed by the Padma Bhushan, and was later conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award. She was also honoured with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and several state and international recognitions for her lifetime contribution to folk arts.

Beyond her performances, Teejan Bai inspired generations of young artists by proving that traditional art forms could thrive on national and international stages without losing their authenticity. She remained deeply committed to preserving India’s intangible cultural heritage and continued mentoring aspiring performers throughout her career.

Cultural experts often described her as more than an artist; they regarded her as a living institution who ensured that Pandavani remained relevant in an era dominated by modern entertainment. Her performances reflected not only artistic excellence but also the rich oral traditions and cultural identity of central India.

Her passing is being viewed as an irreplaceable loss for India’s folk music and performing arts. While her voice has fallen silent, the legacy she leaves behind continues through the countless performances she delivered, the students she inspired and the cultural tradition she helped preserve for future generations.

With Teejan Bai’s death, India bids farewell to a cultural icon whose life embodied resilience, artistic brilliance and an unwavering commitment to the country’s folk heritage. Her legacy is expected to endure as an enduring symbol of the power of traditional storytelling and the timeless appeal of India’s rich cultural traditions.
