Kurukshetra: A mobile-phone snatching investigation has led Kurukshetra police to the recovery of more than 160 mobile phones and over 320 batteries, highlighting the scale of an alleged network involved in handling stolen devices.
The CIA-1 unit of Kurukshetra police arrested two men, identified as Mannu and Harsh, both residents of Kurukshetra, in connection with a phone-snatching case.
The investigation began after a domestic worker reported that three youths riding a motorcycle had approached her from behind and allegedly snatched her mobile phone while she was returning home after work. The incident took place near Power House, and a case was registered at Thanesar City police station.
Police arrested the two suspects on September 15. The mobile phone allegedly taken from the complainant and the motorcycle reportedly used during the incident were recovered.
The investigation subsequently expanded beyond the original snatching complaint.
According to the police, information provided during questioning led investigators to a location associated with a person suspected of purchasing stolen mobile phones. A raid there resulted in the recovery of more than 160 mobile phones and over 320 batteries.
The scale of the recovery has shifted the case from an individual street-crime investigation towards a broader probe into the movement and resale of stolen devices.
Mobile-phone theft and snatching are often connected to secondary markets in which stolen devices can be dismantled, resold or moved to other locations. Tracking such networks requires investigators to examine not only the people who allegedly commit the thefts but also those who purchase, store or redistribute stolen property.
Police are expected to examine the recovered phones to determine their ownership and establish whether they are connected with other complaints.
The case also illustrates how a single complaint can lead investigators towards a wider criminal network when evidence points to repeated transactions involving stolen property.
The recovery of such a large number of phones could potentially help police connect the suspects with additional cases if the devices are found to have been reported stolen elsewhere.
