GURUGRAM — A road-rage case involving a woman biker in Gurugram has taken a more serious turn after police added an attempt to murder charge against gym owner and kabaddi player Kalyan Bainsla, following fresh video evidence and allegations made by the injured rider.
The charge under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was added after investigators examined a newly surfaced video and considered the victim’s account of the incident. The development has intensified scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the collision and raised wider concerns over the safety of women travelling alone on roads in Gurugram and the wider Delhi-NCR region.
The victim, Shivani Chauhan, popularly known as Sia, has alleged that she was deliberately targeted because she was a woman riding a motorcycle. She has also accused Bainsla of leaving the spot after the collision without checking on her condition.
A video recorded by another rider has emerged as a key piece of evidence in the case. According to the allegations and the police action, the footage appears to show Bainsla signalling Sia to stop before his car moved towards her motorcycle and struck it. The footage has therefore become central to the question of whether the collision was accidental or deliberate.
Bainsla, however, has denied intentionally hitting the biker. He has acknowledged that he was at fault in the incident but maintained that he lost control of the vehicle. He has also said that he left the area because he feared being attacked by a crowd that had gathered at the scene.
The conflicting accounts are now at the heart of the investigation. While the victim has described the incident as a deliberate act that placed her life at risk, Bainsla has maintained that there was no intention to cause harm. Investigators are expected to examine the video evidence alongside statements from the victim, the accused and witnesses before determining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The case has attracted considerable public attention, particularly because it involves allegations of a woman being deliberately targeted while riding a motorcycle. Sia has spoken publicly about the incident and expressed distress and shame over what she described as the treatment of women on the road.
The episode has also reignited a broader conversation about road safety and the behaviour of motorists towards women riders in the Delhi-Gurugram corridor. For many women who use two-wheelers, concerns extend beyond traffic violations to harassment, intimidation and aggressive driving.
The addition of the attempt to murder charge marks a significant escalation in the case, but the charge itself does not establish guilt. The allegations will ultimately have to be tested through the investigation and judicial process.
The case also highlights the growing importance of video evidence in road-rage investigations. Footage recorded by motorists and fellow riders can provide investigators with an independent account of events, particularly when the parties involved give sharply different versions of what happened.
For Gurugram, a city with intense daily traffic and a rapidly expanding two-wheeler population, the incident has renewed questions about road behaviour and accountability. The investigation will now have to establish whether the collision was the result of reckless driving and loss of control, as claimed by Bainsla, or a deliberate act, as alleged by Sia.
The central issue remains not only what happened in those few seconds on the road, but whether a dispute between motorists escalated into an act that potentially endangered a person’s life.
