Gurugram: A major infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic movement in Gurugram is moving closer to implementation, with the tender for a proposed 4.2-km elevated stretch of the Southern Peripheral Road expected to receive final approval shortly.
The elevated road is planned between Vatika Chowk and NH-48 and is estimated to cost around ₹775 crore.
According to officials of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, the tender is expected to be cleared by the state’s vetting committee within a week. The state government has already approved the tender proposal, after which the tender can be floated for construction.
The project is being planned against the backdrop of Gurugram’s rapidly increasing traffic volumes and continued expansion of residential, commercial and business areas along the Southern Peripheral Road corridor.
The SPR has become an important east-west movement corridor for Gurugram and connects several major residential and commercial developments with the city’s wider road network.
The elevated section between Vatika Chowk and NH-48 is expected to separate through traffic from local movements at ground level. The objective is to reduce congestion and improve travel efficiency along one of the city’s increasingly busy corridors.
The project is also relevant to the wider National Capital Region because Gurugram’s road network carries substantial traffic between Haryana, Delhi and neighbouring NCR districts.
Infrastructure expansion in Gurugram has accelerated alongside the growth of corporate offices, residential projects, logistics facilities and commercial centres. But the rapid development has also placed pressure on roads and junctions that were originally designed for significantly lower traffic volumes.
The proposed elevated corridor is therefore part of a larger effort to upgrade the city’s transport infrastructure.
The state government has separately approved a broader road-infrastructure programme estimated at ₹9,700 crore. It includes ring roads and bypass projects around Hisar, Kurukshetra, Narnaul, Jind and Sohna-Palwal, with the stated objective of reducing congestion in urban areas and improving connectivity.
Gurugram’s project, however, will have a more immediate urban impact because of the concentration of traffic and development along the SPR-NH-48 corridor.
The effectiveness of an elevated road will depend not only on construction but also on how its entry and exit points connect with existing roads. Poorly integrated junctions can simply move congestion from one location to another.
The authorities will therefore face an important implementation challenge: ensuring that the elevated section works as part of an integrated road network rather than as an isolated structure.
The project will also require coordination over land, construction traffic, utilities and road safety during the construction phase.
Once the tender is formally floated and awarded, the construction timeline will become clearer. For commuters, the immediate significance is that a long-discussed solution to congestion on this important Gurugram corridor is moving closer to the execution stage.
The proposed ₹775-crore elevated road is consequently one of the more significant current infrastructure developments in Gurugram, particularly as the city continues to expand and its road network comes under increasing pressure.
