In a significant policy stride towards holistic child welfare, the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (PSCPCR) unveiled ‘Project JeevanJyot‑2.0’ on July 19. The initiative aims to bring systemic reforms by institutionalizing district-level task forces that prioritize children’s rights through coordinated action.

Each task force, to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of the district, will comprise senior officials from the education, health, police, and labour departments. The goal is to streamline interdepartmental operations, strengthen response mechanisms, and ensure proactive intervention in matters of child exploitation, education, and health.

The second phase of Project JeevanJyot builds upon the foundation laid in its initial phase, which saw the mapping of vulnerable zones, outreach to underserved children, and awareness drives. JeevanJyot‑2.0 introduces technology-enabled reporting tools, child-friendly resource centers, and localized advisory panels that bring together NGOs, legal experts, and community leaders.

Officials highlighted the pressing need for such reforms, especially in light of recent findings showing increasing school dropout rates, growing incidents of child labour, and rising cases of abuse. The project envisions zero tolerance towards any form of negligence or systemic failure in addressing child rights.

Chief Commissioner of PSCPCR, in her statement, emphasized that protecting children goes beyond rescue operations—it includes building environments that nurture growth, emotional health, and education. The initiative also lays out a robust monitoring framework, including monthly audits, surprise inspections, and child helpline integrations.

By anchoring child welfare into the administrative mainstream, Project JeevanJyot‑2.0 stands as a bold move to redefine the state’s relationship with its youngest and most vulnerable citizens. It seeks not only to protect but also to empower, ensuring every child in Punjab has the right to safety, learning, and dignity.
